Recording and Sending in an Audio Comment FAQ

A u d i o   c o m m e n t s   m a d e   e a s y !

We LOVE audio comments, whether they be comments intended to be included in the podcast or not. There is something about actually LISTENING to a person speak about their thoughts and opinions rather than just reading them that makes it mean so much more. This is the reason we started the podcast in the first place. Being able to hear others fangirling over the same things you are brings the experience to a whole new level.

If you would like to send us an audio comment, here are a couple of things to consider:

1. Let us know in the beginning if the comment is NOT something you want to be featured in the podcast. If you do not specify, we will automatically assume you are giving us permission.

and

2. The more concise your comment is, the more likely it will be chosen to appear in the podcast. Sometimes we are short for time and if a comment would require a lot of editing down so that it will fit our time constraints, we may choose not to use it at all.

SKYPE
In order to send an audio comment through Skype, you need to have a microphone hooked up to your computer, whether it’s a built-in mic or a headset mic (which is preferred due to higher quality). Download Skype if you haven’t already, and set up a username and password. Click on the “Add Contact” button and type in our Skype username “jepcast”. Once you have added us, click on our name in your contact list. To the right is a green button with a phone on it. If you click on that button, you will initiate a call with us. It will automatically direct you to our voicemail.

TELEPHONE
We also have a US-based voicemail phone number you can call if you don’t have a microphone for your computer. Simply call 213-537-2278 and leave your message.

GOOGLE TALK (GTALK)
If you use the chat program gtalk and have a computer microphone, you can leave us a voice message through it. Our username is cast@jepcast.com. If you need any more guidance on how to send a voice message through gtalk, send us an email at the same email address as our username.

EMAIL
This final way produces the highest quality audio clip but is also the more complicated method out of the ones mentioned above. Things you will need before starting: a computer microphone (headset mic preferred), Audacity, and the optional LAME MP3 encoder.

Download and install Audacity (and the LAME encoder if you would like to save your audio file as an MP3 for even higher quality). Once installed, plug in your microphone and start Audacity. Along the top, there is a record button. Click that button and record your audio comment. When you are done, simply hit the stop button to the right of it. If you press play, you can hear your recording played back to you.

If you are not comfortable with computers and programs, I recommend you skip this part and go straight down to the segment on how to save right now. If there is a segment of the audio you would like to edit out, highlight that section, go to ‘Edit’ and then choose ‘Delete’.

If you did NOT install the LAME encoder, to save your recording, all you have to do is go to ‘File’ and then ‘Export as WAV’.

If you DID install the LAME encoder, go to ‘File’ and then ‘Export as MP3′.

Once you have your audio clip saved, you can send it to us through email (cast@jepcast.com) or, if it’s too big to be emailed, you can upload it to one of the following free file servers (no registration necessary) and then simply email us the link: MediaFire, MegaUpload, or SendSpace.
