09.12FAQ
What is a podcast?
A podcast is a downloadable audio file—usually featuring music, news, talk, or interviews—that you can download at will or subscribe to using podcast catching software such as iTunes. Think of it as a radio show, without interruptions or commercials, which you can download and listen to at your leisure. The word podcast is derived from ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast’ and is designed to be listened to either streaming online, off your computer, or from your MP3 player wherever you may be.
Does it cost anything?
No. JEP Cast is, and always will be, free of charge.
How do I listen?
As mentioned above, there are several ways you can do this.
The most common way is to subscribe using what is called a ‘podcatcher client’. A podcatcher is simply a program or online service that automatically downloads the episodes for you as they are released. The most popular podcatcher right now is iTunes.
Another way you can listen is by downloading the episodes manually by visiting our site every week. In each episode post, we provide direct download links through such hosts as MegaUpload, SendSpace, and MediaFire. Once downloaded, you can then listen to it straight from your computer, you can burn it to a cd (our podcasts always come in MP3 format), or even transfer it to your MP3 player for listening on the road.
If you’d rather not download, we do offer a streaming player in each episode post. All you have to do is press play and you can listen without downloading the entire MP3 file.
How do I subscribe through iTunes?
Please visit our iTunes FAQ for help regarding iTunes.
What if I don’t want to use iTunes? How do I subscribe?
There are many programs out there, some of them being iPodder, Juice, or Doppler. No matter the service you choose, find the place where you can add a new podcast, subscribe to a new podcast, or add a new feed, and put in our RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed address which is: http://www.jepcast.com/jepcast.xml. It’s as easy as that.
How often do you release new episodes?
We release a new episode every week. Since we record on Saturdays, the episode is always available on Sundays although once in a while we get ambitious and get the episodes out on a Saturday evening.
I would like to be on the show too!
We’re flattered you feel that way! As of right now, we are happy with our current host dynamic and are not looking for any additional co-hosts BUT don’t let that discourage you! The best way to be on the show is to record yourself talking about our topic or question of the week and send it in! Depending on how many responses we get that particular week, we will try to play a segment from your clip if not the entire thing. For rules and guidelines, please see our Recording an Audio Comment FAQ.
In the past, we’ve had a contest for a guest co-host to fill in when some of the regular hosts couldn’t make it. While we don’t have this specifically planned for an episode in the future as of yet, it may pop up so keep an eye out!
You mention sending in an audio comment. I would like to do this but I don’t know how! Can you help me?
We sure can. Keep in mind, there are many ways of recording yourself speaking, but we will only go over the ones we recommend. Please see our Recording an Audio Comment FAQ for more information.
